My Garden Grass

My Garden Grass is Collett’s ongoing internal conversation attempting to differentiate disorder and person. Societal views condition you to believe that what your feeling has a diagnosable answer, as for society this is the easiest way to understand things that don’t seem logical.

Her first noticeable quirk of disliking the feeling of grass is a sensation experienced by many children, even those without sensory concerns. This demonstrates the confusion that eventually activated her tendency towards the self-fulfilling prophecy in later years.

The artist seeks a balance, particularly with today’s long waiting lists for diagnosis, and the likely-related epidemic of self-diagnosis occurring on social media, caused by people feeling lost or unsupported by the UK health system. Through the photographic medium and an installation piece, Collett makes this conversation public and tangible as a relatable experience for audiences.
